Twelve Disciples. One Traitor. No Turning Back.

Award-winning Harpenden Musical Theatre Company are bringing the ground-breaking rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” to the Eric Morecambe Centre in March.

Created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar is the global phenomenon rock opera that has wowed audiences for over 50 years. Originally released as a concept album, the show opened on Broadway in 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre while the original London production ran for over eight years. By the time it closed, after 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history at that time.

Loosely based on the Gospels, and told entirely through song, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final days of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion, but seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. It’s unique among biblical retellings in that it focuses on both Judas’ struggle making the decision to betray Jesus and Jesus’s human psychology, fear, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr. Key events depicted include the anointing of Jesus by Mary Magdalene, the Last Supper, Judas’s betrayal, and Jesus’s trial before Pontius Pilate.

Director, Hailey Budd, said: “I’m delighted to bring this classic show to Harpenden, and this is more than just another retelling—it’s an invitation to explore the themes of loyalty, love, and betrayal in a way that feels deeply relevant today. We want audiences to feel the emotional struggles, the human doubts, and the explosive energy of these characters like never before.”

Jesus Christ Superstar is a product of its era, permeated with 1970’s rock, gospel, folk and funk themes, modern language and colloquialisms, and high-energy dance numbers, and its iconic score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane”, while exploring timeless questions about faith, leadership, and the human condition.
