The public is invited to join the conversation on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 PM at the Lower Red Lion Pub (36 Fishpool Street, AL3 4RX) as Philosophy at the Lower Red Lion delves into the age-old question: “What is Happiness?”

This upcoming gathering marks the third meeting of this initiative, where members of the public are invited to engage in thoughtful discussions on fundamental questions of life over a drink. The series kicked off with an exploration of “What is Justice?” and continued with a lively debate on “What is Freedom?” Building on the success of previous meetings, the group has decided to convene quarterly.

Professor Tim Boatswain, the driving force behind Philosophy at the Lower Red Lion, explains: “I was inspired by the ‘Philosophy in Pubs’ movement across the country and felt it would be a fantastic way to foster intellectual engagement within the St Albans community. I approached David Worcester, the landlord at the Lower Red Lion, who enthusiastically supported the idea.”

Unpacking Happiness: “What is Happiness?” is a question that has puzzled philosophers and thinkers for centuries. It’s often intertwined with positive life experiences, such as achieving personal and professional goals, nurturing meaningful relationships, and engaging in activities that bring pleasure and fulfilment. However, happiness can also arise spontaneously, a sudden burst of joy that seems to come from within, without any apparent external trigger
