This Autumn Trestle Theatre Company are delivering a brand new festival designed with and for the local learning disabled community.
Made possible through funding from the Arts Council of England the All About Us! Festival will celebrate the wealth of creative work accomplished by the local community across the district in a series of 5 performance events taking place in the first week of October all of which will be open for the public to attend.
The project kicked off this summer with a series of highly successful workshops exploring circus skills, singing, spoken word and arts and crafts. Over 100 local people took part in the workshops across the district with participants commenting “It was really fun seeing new people and hearing their perspectives”, “(I had an) amazing time learning new skills” and ”I felt the workshop(s) offered something for everyone”,
The festival week launches with a free event at Cotlandwick Leisure Centre on 1st Oct, between 1 pm – 3 pm which will be filled with an array of activities for all the family including Circus performers, Hand and face painting, Acoustic live music and singing, football demonstrations and much more!
The performance events take place between the 3rd and 9th of October in venues across the city including St Albans Cathedral and the Sandpit Theatre and tickets for all events are now on sale! The lineup includes performances and films from The Purple All Stars, Music 24, Herts Inclusive Theatre, BEEE Creative and Trestle’s very own ACT UP, DANCE NOW and SING OUT groups among others, these events are guaranteed to be an unforgettable celebration of the rich talents of the learning disabled community within the district.
Following the festival week the project will continue with an exhibition celebrating past, present and future art and memories from and with the participants running at St Albans Museum from Jan to February 2023. Throughout the project, we will be collecting oral histories from people with lived experiences of learning disabilities, friends, family, key workers and others that will feature in the exhibition. These oral histories will be presented as an installation celebrating this vibrant, creative and diverse community in their own words and art.
Trestle’s Creative Director Helen Barnett said ‘We were utterly blown away with the response to the summer workshops and I know the participants can’t wait to share their hard work. Bringing everyone together, as well as meeting new participants and groups has already been incredibly rewarding and we are looking forward to continuing to build this work throughout the festival and beyond. It certainly won’t be one to be missed! ’
Partners already include Purple All Stars, The Daylight Club and Passport to Leisure. Kate Harding at Purple All Stars said “This wonderful festival means we can be our best creative selves and deliver our ‘All about Us’ messages to the St Albans community.”
