More about: Community, Local Events, Music
St Albans Chamber Choir is delighted to be welcoming our friends from Wormser Kantorei, the choir from our twin town of Worms in Southern Germany, to join us for a concert at St Peter’s Church, St Albans, Saturday 26th April at 7 pm, marking over 55 years of celebrating unity through the connection of music.
Our two choirs have enjoyed friendship and music-making since 1969, meeting biennially and interrupted only by the pandemic. This concert celebrates partnerships and connections and under the batons of Musical Directors John Gibbons and Stefan Merkelbach the joint choirs will perform Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Salieri’s Requiem in C Minor and the orchestra will delight us with Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto, with Ruby Aspinall on the Harp and Peter Robertson on the flute.
The Chichester Psalms, a sacred work by Leonard Bernstein (more widely known for West Side Story and many others) has at its heart a Brotherhood of Man – a friendship between all people across all nations – exactly the ethos the town twinning promotes. Like Bernstein, Salieri wrote most of his compositions for opera and stage and Requiem in C Minor is his only large scale requiem. Though not as frequently performed as Mozart and others it is a fascinating work with each section carefully balanced and crafted.
The concert will take place at St Peter’s Church, St Albans at 7pm on Saturday 26th April. Tickets are £18 for adults and £5 for students available from ticketsource.co.uk/stalbanschamberchoir
