Simon Armitage is a world-renowned poet, playwright, novelist, and musician. He grew up in Yorkshire. He started out his working life as a probation officer before turning to writing poetry full time His poems often reflect his Yorkshire roots. In 2019, Simon Armitage was appointed the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, a role where he continues to champion the importance of poetry. He is also a professor of poetry at the University of Leeds.
Simon’s latest poem is dedicated to all those people who are working in the Probation Service. After interviewing many probation staff, he created a short poem that shines a light on what it’s really like working in the job day-to-day. He sees probation work as very much misunderstood due to television and film portrayals of the work that the probation service does.
Simon spoke to Mix Mornings about his new poem, life as a modern day poet and the impact of artificial intelligence on the world of poetry.
