Talking mental health, suicide prevention and goal-setting on The Parents’ Show.

Tuesday was World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a very difficult topic for parents and carers to think about let alone discuss. But it is vital to understand and reflect some factors related to suicide.

Fifty percent of youth suicide has nothing to do with mental health but more related to emotional overload.

Often when young people are confronted with obstacles they don’t know how to overcome them. It is vital that parents help their children learn the skills to plan and achieve goals so that when they are older, they become more competent in being solution focused adolescents and adults who are able to find positive solutions to their problems.

Speaking to us about how to help children about this approach is Debi Roberts who works for Youth Connexions Hertfordshire and is CEO of the Ollie Foundation.

We’d like to look at how goal setting works in practice, so will be speaking to Yousef Bakshi, a young man from Cardiff who has just started his first semester at Harvard University and will  be joining us live from the campus to tell us about realising his goal of earning a scholarship to Harvard and what it entails.
