The Hands Together Tipliang Project, founded in 2012, honours the memory of a young British soldier, Michael Allmand, who gave his life in Burma during World War II. His family, along with those of his comrades, Major James Lumley and Tulbahadur Pun, have stayed connected, leading to a remarkable initiative in Tiplyang, a remote Himalayan village in Nepal. Michael’s niece came into our studios to tell us more.

The charity’s journey began with a request from Tul Bahadur Pun to build a school in his village. With support from Major Lumley’s daughter, the actor Joanna Lumley, the Allman family, and the local villagers, a school was constructed using local stone and designed to be earthquake-resistant. Today, the school serves children from infancy to age 16, providing crucial education and resources that were previously lacking.

Beyond the initial school, the charity has expanded its efforts, repairing classrooms, building teacher accommodations, and addressing overcrowding in other schools. Fundraising continues, including through events like a charity performance of Nell Gwynn at the Abbey Theatre on November 7th.

Remarkably, 99% of the funds raised go directly to the projects, transforming lives in Nepal and creating a lasting legacy from a wartime sacrifice.

Tickets to the performance of Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale are available by phoning 07821 726357
