To mark Deaf Awareness Week, May 5th-11th, on Sunday May 4th The Parents’ Show speaks to Lesley Reeves-Costi, co-head at Heathlands School in St Albans, which featured in the recent BBC documentary ‘Old hands, new tricks’ with Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Lesley is herself deaf, and in a first for Mix 92.6, we recorded a video interview with Lesley and her interpreter, who spoke to Vivien and also used Sign Assisted English to answer Vivien’s questions.
The video, a transcript of the interview and podcast will be available at the same time as the show is aired on Mix 92.6 and will be available to watch after the show as well of course.
Lesley talks about the school, where the students (who are all deaf) come from, their activities, educational structure and some of the amazing achievements their students have gone on to.
The school also offers BSL courses for non-students and adults to encourage wider communication with the community.
In part two, Mix Morning’s Neil Rodger discovers the incredible work of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf as Trudi and Jeff share heartwarming stories about how these amazing dogs transform lives.
